Wednesday Wishes 2 - 8 February
Hello!
Welcome to Wednesday Wishes.
Still the “special” train timetable persists on Southern Rail. At the same time Network Rail has announced a raft of Commuter Rewards to encourage people to get back on the trains. Maybe they could just talk to Southern Rail and suggest a return to a full timetable, which is more likely to encourage passengers than a free coffee.
Train rant over (again). So far this week I have gazed at highly coloured portraits of basketball players that feature no face but are still embody the players. Seen a room full of self portraits, Van Gogh was definitely ahead of the curve when it came to selfies. Later this week I will venture west to Kew to see the Orchid festival.
Have you been to Old Operating Theatre in the shadow of the Shard? I clambered up a narrow spiral staircase to visit last week. Hidden in the roof space of a church it is not obviously a medical building. 200 years ago the connecting wall was knocked through from the neighbouring Dorcas women’s ward at St Thomas’s hospital. When St Thomas’s moved down the river to opposite the Houses of Parliament the wall was bricked up and the Operating Theatre forgotten until 1962. Now you can visit, sit in the seats that medical students would have occupied and even watch the recreation of an operation.
Happy Culturing
