Hello
Glowing lights to soften the blow of short days are everywhere at the moment. Be quick to catch Crown and Coronation at the Tower of London which ends this week and includes a chance to see the Crown Jewels out of hours. Elsewhere If Not Now When? At the Saatchi Gallery looks at sixty years of women making sculpture in Britain, Hospital at the South London Gallery offers the chance to get to know Pope.L and book of the week will transport you to 18th century London.
OK pictures, lots of them from my trip to Durham. Lumiere was excellent, the highlight for me was being in the Cathedral late at night with a constellation of lights above me, all beating, one of them to my heart beat as the sound of a beating heart echoed round the nave. So moving, I cried. Lumiere takes place every two years, so start making plans for 2025!
Over in Bishop Auckland the new Faith Museum is really interesting, looking at the many strands of faith in past and current times. Oldest object in the museum is the Gainford Stone found in a megalithic tomb just down the road from Bishop Auckland, adorned with rings and whorls.
Star of the Bowes Museum is a life size mechanical swan, at the moment it is in the final stages of restoration, just waiting for enough money to be raised to put it all together. I had been disappointed not to see it swim but it turns out the seeing the dismantled swan is every bit as fascinating.
Happy Culturing
