Did you know that Peggy Guggenheim lived in Petersfield? No me neither until last week. She bought Yew Tree Cottage and lived their for five years just before the Second World War. It was here that she started to collect are in earnest. Vowing to buy a picture a day. After Petersfield she went to live in Paris and then a palazzo in Venice where you can still see her collection. The full story of Peggy, Petersfield and her collection is told in Peggy Guggenheim: Petersfield to Palazzo at Petersfield Museum. Getting to Petersfield takes just over an hour from Waterloo.
Quentin Blake has created many drawings for hospitals over the years, usually you only get to see them if you are a patient. Now you can see them in Quentin Blake: The Illustrated Hospital at Moyses Hall Bury St Edmunds. Visiting Moyses Hall is always a joy as the permanent collection contains several gems, I especially like the large collection of works by Mary Beale.
As I walked through St Jame’s Square on my way to see Vivienne Westwood at Christies I saw a poster for Alls Well That Ends Well. It will be performed in the square this summer as part of Shakespeare in Squares. Take a look at the website, keep your fingers crossed for dry weather and make plans.
Where will you wander this week?
Happy Culturing
