Hello
Welcome to Wednesday Wishes. This week has lots of photos. Photographs of David Bowie in Fitzrovia, a veritable treasure trove of pop stars in South Kensington and of acts of feminist resistance in Peckham. Over at the Barbican naked men and a chain mail curtain. Maria Callas has been by sound track to this week as I read Diva by Daisy Goodwin.
Yesterday I had a day of catch up. As well as getting very wet I saw the newly reopened Grant Museum of Zoology just off Gower Street, which is still a glorious depository of things in jars and butterflies in trays. Free to visit and perfect for the nature curious. Over in the Barbican I saw Unravel, I expected to love this and was not disappointed. So many textiles, used to create beautiful messages of protest. Also one of the very best exhibition shops, stacked full of yarn to knit your creation and books to show you how create things out of bits of stuff.
The Royal Mews have reopened. Right next to Buckingham Palace the Mews are where the King’s carriages, horses to pull them and his cars are kept in readiness for Royal use. You get to see all the carriages and state landaus that trundle past on state occasions, they really are magnificent. Horses peer out over their stalls, you can see the saddles and bridles being kept in tip top condition and there is ever a landau you can clamber into
Every year the Whitechapel Gallery celebrates an Art Icon, this year Isaac Julien is the chosen artist. Alongside a big party is an auction hosted by Phillips. Seven works are up for sale and all proceeds go to the Whitechapel education and public programmes. Bidding is now live and closes on March 19, take a look and if maybe place a bid if your pockets are deep enough.
Happy Culturing
Catherine
