Welcome to Wednesday Wishes.
You need to be quick of the mark to see Diana, Princess of Wales’s black sheep jumper. It went on show at Sotheby’s on Monday and heads of to New York this evening (Wednesday). Elsewhere and longer lived; Paula Rego at the National Gallery where her huge mural Crivelli’s Garden is reunited with the Crivelli altarpiece that inspired it. Over at Somerset House Black Venus looks at the way that Black women have been portrayed both in the past and now. Damien Hirst’s latest painting series at Phillips and book of the week is a special edition of The BFG.
Last week I headed out to the Roald Dahl Museum at Great Missenden. I confess that having visited I’m not sure why I haven’t before. It is really easy to get to, just 45 minutes from Marylebone station and then steps away at the other end or just off the M40. The highlight for me was walking around Great Missenden seeing Sophie’s orphanage and Matilda’s library followed by a stroll across meadows to the Nags Head where Roald Dahl used to drink. If you had to draw a country pub it would look like the Nags Head. This summer the museum has all manner of BFG related activities and guided walks around Great Missenden.
Summer holidays are beckoning. Friends who still have school age children are excitedly looking forward to the end of the term and holidays this Friday. To celebrate I have written my Best Summer Books 2023 blogpost which is now live. Just what you need to plan for summer holiday reading.
Happy Culturing
