Hello!
Welcome to Wednesday Wishes. Mr CW and I escaped the snow and flew to Palma this weekend. We have never headed to the sunshine in winter before and are wondering why. More about Palma next week but first cultural events in London. Three free exhibitions this week. Golden glowing drawings by Evelyn de Morgan at Leighton House, the Ugly Duchess at the National Gallery and State-less 無國界 at Two Temple Place. Not a novel this week but a cookbook for book of the week.
Did you know that Quality Street the tin of chocolates that your grandmother always had at Christmas was named after a play by JM Barrie of Peter Pan fame? No me neither. But it is true. Northern Broadsides has a new production of Quality Street honed with the wit of former production line workers from the factory in Halifax. It open in Richmond Theatre in April. I can’t wait to see Regency couple who graced the tin in my youth come to life on the stage.
Something a bit different from the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Southbank. They are to perform the UK premiere of Heiner Goebbels’ A House of Call on March 25th. Changes to regular orchestral performances are promised right from the start as the piece begins before the conductor arrives or the lights go down. That tuning sound will gradually morph into the piece. Musicians will come and go during the work. When the conductor does arrive it won’t be centre stage. Sounds intriguing.
If you are planning a spot of Cultural Travel one of my exhibitions worth travelling for has just opened at the Kunstmuseum in The Hague. M C Escher - The Other World has Escher’s famous drawings side by side with life size recreations allowing you to walk inside his world.
There is a new museum coffee shop in town and I’ve been to try it out for you. It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it. I can report that the cafe at Leighton House serves an excellent cake and cup of coffee. I was there a tough to early for lunch but there looked to be some excellent savoury morsels on offer too. Details of the cafe and all the others that I have selflessly explored are here in my exhaustive guide to London’s Museum cafes. Let me know of any others I should try.
Happy Culturing
