Hello
You find me still coughing and easily tired after my brush with Covid but getting stronger every day. This weeks Wednesday Wishes features skateboards at the Design Museum, AI flowers at Kew, postal uniforms at the Postal Museums and Coronation chairs at Christies.
This time last week I was on a whirl wind trip to Antwerp and Leuven with Visit Flanders checking out two new exhibitions both in my Exhibitions Worth Travelling For. My big discovery was both Leuven and Dieric Bouts. Leuven itself is home to Flanders’ oldest university and Dieric Bouts was the cities most important artist in the 16th century. You can find out all about Bouts in an exhibition devoted to him at M Leuven and a citywide festival. He painted scenes of the torments of hell way before Hieronymus Bosch and gave angels multi coloured wings.
Handel and Jimi Hendrix lived in the same house. Centuries apart obviously. Now the house is open as a museum dedicated to both musicians. Every time I have visited the house has been filled with music. You can experience the music filled evenings at the Handel Hendrix House every Friday from this Friday until the end of February (with a break for Christmas). Tickets cost £20 and can be booked via the Handel Hendrix website.
Looking for cultural diversion just a short hop from London? Last week one of my subscribers emailed me with news of an interesting exhibiton they’d seen in Cambridge. Spitting Image: A Controversial History is a small show featuring puppets from Spitting Image at the University library, tickets are free or you can make a donation. Do let me know of interesting cultural things that you’ve seen.
Happy Culturing
Catherine
