Hello
Welcome to Wednesday Wishes.
Mr CW and I are on a tour of Cathedrals this week Derby, York and Ripon with Beverley Minster thrown in for good measure, so I will be seeing most this week’s wishes on Friday. It will be a whirl as I see Form Comes Alive the Hayward Gallery, Notre Dame at Westminster Abbey, Frank Auerbach’s Charcoal Heads at the Courtauld Gallery and Alison Lapper is Lost in Parys at the Bethlem Museum of the Mind. Fourteen Days edited by Margaret Attwood and Douglas Preston brings many voices into one story.
Emery Walker’s house by the river in Hammersmith is an Arts and Crafts treasure house. Emery Waker was a key member of the Arts and Crafts movement. Together with T J Cobden-Sanderson he founded the Doves press and the pair created a special typeface for the books they printed. When they fell out Cobden-Sanderson flung the whole typeface into the Thames off the Hammersmith Bridge. Finding parts of the typeface is a highlight of any mudlarks career. When the house opens in March there will be a special exhibition of the typeface found by mudlarks over the years. Before then there are a series of talks about the typeface and mudlarking. Take a look at the Emery Walker House website for details of booking the exhibitions and talks.
Dotted around the University College London buildings are a series of small but fascinating museums. The Grant Museum of Zoology is full of skeletons and things in jars. When the Cultural Young Men were Junior CW’s we spent many happy hours marvelling at the the things on display. The museum has been shut for refurbishment but opens again this week. I can’t wait to revisit.
Happy Culturing
